Muslim Leaders, Far-Right in Row over Mosques in Austria
A call for more mosques with minarets in Austria gave rise Sunday to heated criticism from far-right politicians, some going as far as demanding a ban on all immigrants from Muslim countries.
In an interview with the Austria Press Agency published Sunday, the head of the country's Islamic community (IGGiOe), Anas Shakfeh, said he wished to see a mosque with a minaret in each of Austria's nine provincial capitals.
"That's my hope for the future," he said.
"In the long term, one cannot prevent people from exercising their true religious freedom, which is protected by the constitution," he noted.
This implied not just a prayer room for Muslims but a full mosque with a minaret, according to Shakfeh, although he added that the height of the structures could be negotiated and that they need not include loudspeakers for the call to prayer.
Austria's two far-right parties immediately reacted, with the main Freedom Party (FPOe) describing mosques as "hotbeds for radical Islam" and calling for an "immigration ban on people from Islamic countries."
The smaller Alliance for Austria's Future (BZOe) urged a ban on mosques and minarets in all Austrian provinces, arguing that they were "cells of resistance for a parallel society that is inhuman and hostile to democracy."
This represented "a new low point" in the debate over Islam in Austria, noted Omar al-Rawi, a Social Democrat (SPOe) deputy and integration representative for the IGGiOe.
"Instead of spouting hate and generalizations, these politicians should put an end to their anti-Islamic agitation and apologize for these slips," he said.
"If there are any preachers of hate in this country, they are in the FPOe party headquarters," added the SPOe's party secretary for Vienna, Christian Deutsch.
Notoriously anti-immigrant, the FPOe has repeatedly campaigned with anti-Islamic slogans, such as "Daham statt Islam" ("Home, rather than Islam" in Austrian dialect) or "Abendland in Christenhand" ("The West in Christian hands").
According to the latest estimate by the Austrian Integration Fund (OeIF), just over half a million Muslims live in Austria, out of a total population of about 8.3 million.(AFP)
